Heather Self
Heather has almost 40 years of experience in accountancy and tax, working in the accountancy and legal professions. Heather has taken part in fundraising events for the Charity, alongside her role as a trustee.
Heather qualified as a chartered accountant in 1983 and went on to specialise in tax. She has been a tax partner in mid-sized and international accounting firms, and was also a partner in an international law firm. She has also worked as Tax Director for a FTSE 100 energy company and as a senior anti-avoidance adviser for HMRC. She has an MA in mathematics from Cambridge University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales, and of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
Heather lives in Macclesfield, Cheshire with her husband, three labradors and three cats. Her hobbies are walking with friends, ParkRun and seeing Shakespeare plays. She and her husband also own a fully-restored ex-BR steam engine, which runs on the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway.
Heather’s involvement with Hearing Dogs began when her dog Ayla had a litter of puppies, one of which was donated to the Charity. Heather has also taken part in a number of fundraising events and activities for Hearing Dogs.
Heather has previously been a Charity Trustee for her professional body, the Chartererd institute of Taxation. She brings a deep knowledge of finance and taxation, as well as a love of dogs and some personal experience of hearing loss through her grandmother, who became deaf as an adult.
