This month in training: July 2023

Posted by Matt Sadler

Siblings Keith and Kimi have been on an adventure together, Cockapoo Gus is smiling his way through training, Nico has been to a supermarket, and much more. Find out what our clever pups have been learning.

1. Our superstar siblings take the train

Keith (left) and Kimi were the perfect passengers on their train journey together.

Our adventurous Labradors did a great job with all the unusual noises and movements, and settled beautifully next to each other on their return trip.

A hearing dog might accompany their deaf partner on public transport, so it's important they are relaxed with the experience - and Keith and Kimi were absolute stars.

2. Miniature poodle Merlin is the paw-fect passenger

Miniature poodle Merlin has ticked off a very important training milestone, as he has travelled by bus for the first time.

Magical Merlin was relaxed throughout the whole experience and settled beautifully during the journey.

Well done Merlin!

3. Say hello to Kyle

A warm welcome to the adorable Kyle, who has just joined our puppy training scheme.

He may be at the very start of his early training, but our very cute cocker spaniel has already mastered the perfect sit. Have lots of fun, Kyle!

4. Clever Gus and his big smile

Cockapoo puppy Gus showed off his lovely sit and wait (and his lovely smile) during his puppy training class.

Gus is such a clever boy - picking up his basic cues and lots of other new skills so quickly. Well done Gus!

5. Say 'cheese' Nico!

Nico did a great job on his trip to a supermarket, and is clearly far better at resisting cheese than we are!

Going shopping with his deaf partner will be an everyday task for Nico and he showed lovey focus on his volunteer trainer, despite all of the possible distractions.

6. That all-important bond

Creating strong, positive relationships between our puppies and their volunteer trainers is vital.

Cocker spaniel Chip is being trained by Julie, and an important part of his early hearing dog training is centred around building that bond.

7. Clever Kip is going to change a deaf person's life!

Wonderful news to bring you as cocker spaniel Kip has passed his final assessment and he is going to be a life-changing hearing dog.

In this video, you will see Kip alerting to a timer and the smoke alarm. Our dogs alert to most sounds by leading their partner to the source of it. However, the 'danger signal' sees Kip lie down instead, so he doesn't take anyone into a potentially hazardous situation.

Kip has been a superstar throughout his training and a huge thank you must go to his incredible team, who have been behind him every step of the way.

Sponsor a puppy and change a deaf person's life

These cute puppies are training to become life-changers. Sponsor them from £5 a month and follow their journey as they learn how to help a deaf person.
