This month in training: June 2024
Posted by Matt Sadler
A month of heading out and about for our pups as they explore public spaces. Merlin hopped on a bus, Hovis went to town, and brothers Tommy and Timmy visited the train station.
1. Merlin has been travelling
Our pretty poodle was the perfect passenger on his recent trip on public transport.
A key part of Merlin's Puppy 3 Star training is travelling on buses and trains to help build his confidence for any public transport trips he might take with his future deaf partner.
2. Hovis goes to town
Our favourite little loaf has been out and about exploring the town.
As part of the second stage of his training, Hovis has risen to the occasion and started to explore public spaces with his volunteer trainer.
3. Gizmo is almost at the finish line
Our clever cockapoo recently passed the third stage of his hearing dog training and is now getting ready to start the final part of training.
This is where Gizmo will focus on learning how to alert his future deaf partner to important sounds like a cooker timer and doorbell, and life-saving ones such as a smoke alarm.
4. Parsley is pretty proud
Parsley is one proud puppy after passing the first stage of his hearing dog training – the Puppy 1 Star.
He’s been having fun exploring his surroundings and working on his basic cues like ‘sit’ and ‘wait’.
5. Practice makes perfect
Cole is in the early stages of his soundwork training where he’s practicing alerting to sounds and working on his ‘danger signal’.
He’s learning all the steps he needs for the danger signal, starting with a nudge and then going into his ‘down’. With practice, Cole will put these steps together to make the perfect sound alert.
6. It’s a boy's day out for the brothers
Tommy and Timmy took a trip to their local train station for a spot of exploring.
They’ve been checking out all the sights and sounds of the train station, as well as riding in the lift, to build their confidence ahead of their very first trip on the train.
It's important that hearing dogs are comfortable using public transport, as it could be something they experience with their deaf partners.
Sponsor a puppy and change a deaf person's life
These cute puppies are training to become life-changers. Sponsor them from £5 a month and follow their journey as they learn how to help a deaf person.
