This month in training: November 2022

Posted by Matt Sadler

Maisy has reached a first major milestone in her training, brothers Oslo and Orlando have been on a train journey and little Opal enjoyed a trip to a garden centre. Find out what else our clever pups have been learning in their classes.

1. Maisy has reached a milestone in her training
Cockapoo puppy Maisy with her certificate for passing the first stage of hearing dog training

Maisy only started her training a couple of months ago, but she has already passed the first stage - the 'Puppy One Star'.

Our very cute cockapoo has been working on her basic cues such as 'sit' and 'wait', and has also been encouraged to investigate lots of new sights, sounds and smells.

Well done Maisy!

2. All aboard for Oslo and Orlando

Brothers Oslo (in the first photo) and Orlando were perfect passengers on their train journey together.

Our clever cockapoos waited patiently at the station, before settling beautifully during the trip.

If a deaf person uses public transport then we want their new hearing dog to be comfortable with the experience, and our super siblings did brilliantly.

3. Trick or treat?

Like many of us, Hamlet got into the Halloween spirit and went on a pumpkin trail.

Hamlet is doing brilliantly in the second stage of his training and one of the areas he is focusing on is his on-lead walking.

Our dogs can come across some very strange objects when out with their deaf partner, so it's important they aren't worried by any odd sights and sounds.

Hamlet wasn't fazed at all by some spooky decorations, and even stopped for some photos.

4. Opal has exploring a garden centre

Opal has been on her first visit to a garden centre, and she took the new experience in her stride.

Garden centres are the perfect place for our dogs to visit in their early training, as they are quiet and relaxed environments with lots of interesting new sights, sounds and smells.

Great job, Opal!

5. A spot of shopping for Rose and Wilbur

Cocker spaniels Rose and Wilbur went on a trip into town together as part of their training.

Both Rose and Wilbur have recently started to concentrate more on training in public places, and they visited a number of shops to practise in different environments.

It's incredibly important our dogs are comfortable and relaxed in the many different places they visit with their deaf partner, and after a spot of shopping, it was time for Wilbur and Rose to practise their settles in a café.

6. Orbit has been learning to avoid distractions

Orbit's puppy class was all about potential distractions and helping him to focus on his volunteer trainer when asked to.

There were many new objects to investigate, plenty of treats to sniff out and lots of pups to play with, but Orbit did a brilliant job!

7. Nancy has passed her final assessment!

Miniature poodle Nancy is celebrating passing her final hearing dog assessment!

Nancy might be small in size, but she is big in personality, and has made a lot of friends during her training.

You will see how Nancy alerts to an alarm clock and the smoke alarm when her volunteer trainer is in bed, with the alert to the smoke alarm indicating a ‘danger’ signal.

Thank you so much to Nancy's amazing team - she is going to change her partner's life.

Sponsor a puppy and change a deaf person's life

These cute puppies are training to become life-changers. Sponsor them from £5 a month and follow their journey as they learn how to help a deaf person.
