This month in training: October 2022
Posted by Matt Sadler
Rose has been working on her settle, Wilbur has been shopping, Pedro has been on a train, and Molly has some wonderful news to tell you. Find out what our clever pups have been learning in their training.
1. Rose has been visiting lots of public places
Rose's settle is coming along a treat and she has been practising at an outdoor café.
A key part of training is making sure our dogs are comfortable and relaxed in the environments they may visit with their deaf partner, and Rose was certainly that.
Great job, Rose!
2. Wilbur hits the shops
The very handsome Wilbur has been doing a spot of shopping in his new burgundy training jacket.
Our clever cocker spaniel has just started the third stage of his hearing dog training and this is where our dogs practise more in public places and on public transport.
Well done, Wilbur!
3. Pedro is the perfect passenger
A different kind of 'train-ing' for cocker spaniel Pedro, who has been busy practising on public transport.
It’s important our pups experience travelling on public transport before they become a hearing dog and Pedro wasn't fazed at all.
4. Behind the scenes at Orbit's puppy class
Labrador Orbit's puppy training class was all about practising his 'sit', 'down' and 'wait'.
These basic cues will be vital throughout Orbit's training and when he grows into a life-changing hearing dog.
Orbit is in the first stage of his hearing dog training and you can find out what else he is learning here.
5. Ignoring distractions
Picnics, tennis, mobility scooters, and more - our pups navigated a number of potential distractions as they spent the morning having fun in our 'summer street experience'.
Our clever dogs were encouraged to investigate lots of new objects to learn they are nothing to be wary of, and also work on their focus whilst there were interesting things going on around them.
6. Marvellous Molly
Cockapoo Molly has passed her assessment to be a life-changing hearing dog!
You will see Molly alerting to a cooker timer and the doorbell, as well as performing the danger signal to a fire siren.
Our dogs alert to most sounds by leading their partner to the source. However, Molly lies down to alert to the fire siren as we wouldn't want her to lead anyone into a potentially hazardous situation.
Sponsor a puppy and change a deaf person's life
These cute puppies are training to become life-changers. Sponsor them from £5 a month and follow their journey as they learn how to help a deaf person.
