Sue and Anthony's Volunteering Story
Posted by Victoria Leedham
Sue and Anthony have been part of the Hearing Dogs volunteer family for almost 2 years, but they’ve already made a mammoth difference in a short time. Having taken early retirement, the couple wanted to do something “useful and worthwhile” with their free time. On bumping into a volunteer for the Charity, they instantly thought “we could do that!” and came away feeling inspired by their chance meeting. This is when they decided to become full-time volunteer puppy trainers for Hearing Dogs.
“Our initial dealings with the brilliant staff at The Grange easily convinced us that Hearing Dogs for Deaf People was a charity we definitely wanted to be part of”, Sue commented. The couple were blown away by the huge difference our clever dogs can make to a hearing-impaired person and could not wait to lend a hand.
Yorkie, an aptly named chocolate Working Cocker Spaniel puppy, has gone to live with Sue and Anthony during his training and he has completely stolen their hearts! Sue describes him as an affectionate chap where “cuddles are compulsory”, but aside from this his training is progressing very well and the couple feel like proud parents at his accomplishments. Although they will be incredibly sad when he moves on to his recipient, they know he will go on to do a very important job and make a huge difference to someone’s life – “it’s so rewarding to think we will have played a part in that!” Sue says.
Sue also praises the sense of community within the charity, where you really do feel like you are part of a family. She says has been made to feel welcomed and valued by both staff and other volunteers right from the start and relishes the regular opportunities and events to meet up with everyone.
The couple said that training Yorkie is one of the most “positive things” they’ve ever done and would whole-heartedly encourage others to do the same. “It’s a real privilege and knowing that the pup will go on to change someone’s life is the icing on the cake!”
