Bertie training and entertaining

Posted by Brendan Cooper

Bertie has now moved on from his Nanny, and is living with Volunteer Puppy Trainer Natalie and her family!

She has welcomed little Bertie into her home, and will look after him for his first year. She will very kindly give up her free time to train him, as well as introduce him to the world so that he's happy wherever he goes.

It didn't take him long to let Natalie know what he likes. So, what are his preferences in life? Let's see...

Well, he likes shoes (specifically, trainers).

He likes wellies (specifically, muddy wellies).

He sort of likes ducks (specifically, Aylesbury ducks).

Hairbrushes are a favourite (specifically, his).

And did we mention shoes (specifically, trainers)?

So he's settled in and surrounded by the things he loves - trainers, wellies, ducks (occasionally) and hairbrushes.

What do you think of this Pupdate so far, Bertie?

Hmmmm. Let's try a bit harder. How about some videos?

We did say this Pupdate was about training, so here's some magnificent impulse control from Bertie...

The idea is that the more Bertie learns to control himself in a positive way, the happier, more relaxed and calm he will be. It's not about teaching him to resist treats: it's about helping him to resist impulses that might result in him rushing out of the front door or across a road. This would never do for a hearing dog that needs to look after a deaf person. So, by giving him treats and rewarding him when he waits for the cue, Bertie is learning that waiting patiently is good. And he's so good at waiting, he gets lots of treats! Happy Bertie!

Impulse control really works - and Bertie is really good at it.

Another part of Bertie's training is to learn never to stray too far away during walks. Again, this is for the benefit of his eventual deaf partner. They will need to know that Bertie is nearby and that, should they call him, vocally or with a whistle, he'll come running. So, Natalie is making sure he does - with a 'Good boy!' and a bit of a fuss this time.

As you can see below, Bertie has such a fab time sniffing around and being a dog - but is never beyond earshot.

He's such a good boy!

We also said that this Pupdate was about entertaining. This is as important as his training. Our puppies help deaf people practically in many ways, but they're also companions. Deaf people tell us they can feel lost and lonely, and that their furry friends really help cheer them up and are wonderful company. So, it's very encouraging that Bertie seems to be a natural entertainer with brilliant comic timing...

He even manages to make bed-time funny!

Now Bertie, are you a bit happier with this Pupdate after that...?

We think that's a 'yes'. And look at what a handsome, happy puppy he's becoming!

This is all thanks to you for supporting him. He's doing so well, in the care of such dedicated, loving volunteers. We're so pleased with his progress, and we hope you are too. So until the next Pupdate... thank you for sponsoring Bertie!

Hi, I'm Brendan. I write all your sponsor pup updates, printed and online. It's a hard life, writing about cute puppies who, with your support, will grow up to help deaf people leave loneliness behind. I am partially deaf myself, so I have some insights into the challenges deafness can bring. However, I don't have a dog of my own: I have two Maine Coon cats who are quite dog-like and take up most of my time!
