Cooper's adventure to the library (and beyond!)
Posted by Elizabeth Murphy
Welcome back to The Puppy Pen! Let’s catch up with lovely Cooper.
Cooper’s favourite way to start the day is cuddles with his beloved teddy…
You’ll remember from the last episode that Cooper has adored this teddy since he was a tiny pup!
Today we are going to join Cooper for a fun day of training 'out and about'.
Volunteer puppy trainer Clare is helping to gradually build Cooper’s confidence in busy public places. This is an important part of his training as we want Cooper to feel happy and relaxed accompanying his future deaf partner to many different places. Through gentle reward-based training, Cooper is learning that visiting new places is lots of fun.
First up, Cooper visited the library!
Cooper is learning that the library is a very quiet and peaceful environment, so he must be on his best behaviour.
Cooper behaved beautifully and was very happy to calmly settle down and watch the world go by…
Being calm is one of Cooper’s star qualities! Throughout his training, Cooper has shown that he is able to stay relaxed and settled while ‘out and about’.
Clare recently took Cooper on a trip to the hospital to help him feel comfortable and familiar with the unique sights, smells and sounds that can be found there.
As you can see, Cooper walked brilliantly on his lead and maintained perfect focus and attention on Clare, and didn’t get distracted by what was happening around him. We are so proud of Cooper. One day, he might be providing emotional comfort to his future deaf partner as he accompanies them to hospital appointments.
Time for a little break and once again, Cooper demonstrates a perfect settle…
In fact, Cooper is quite the settling superstar!
Clever Cooper knows exactly when it’s time to settle down and relax. When Cooper’s future deaf partner takes him to a café or restaurant, they will hopefully feel reassured that they can enjoy the company of their family and friends, while Cooper enjoys some ‘down time’.
Cooper’s burgundy jacket will also make staff and fellow customers aware that his partner has hearing loss. This will help to spark conversations and raise awareness of the challenges that deaf people encounter.
After a brilliant day of training in public places, it’s time to let off some steam and enjoy a lovely and refreshing walk.
Cooper looks like he is really enjoying the fresh air as he poses in front of the beautiful rainbow.
Back home now and it’s time for this clever pup to have a very well-deserved snooze...
That’s it for today! We hope you have enjoyed hearing about how exceptionally well Cooper is doing in his training in public places. We are all so proud of him.
Cooper is well on his way to becoming an amazing life-changing hearing dog.
This would not have been possible without your incredible support.
So, until next time, from everyone at Hearing Dogs, thank you so much for sponsoring Cooper.
