More time for Forrest

Posted by Brendan Cooper

In your previous update, we told you how well Forrest was doing. He was just starting his soundwork training, learning to recognise sounds such as the alarm clock and fire alarm.

However, our Forrest has developed a condition that is causing him itchy skin and repeated ear infections. We think this might be something to do with a food allergy. So, Forrest is under the close supervision of a dietary specialist, who is working hard to find out what could be causing this.

In the meantime, we’ve noticed that the ear infections also make his hearing very sensitive – obviously not ideal for recognising loud sounds such as the fire alarm which are extremely important.

The health and wellbeing of our dogs is absolutely our top priority. Forrest has been having these issues for quite some time, and we really cannot say when they’ll be resolved. So, we have decided it’s in Forrest’s best interests to withdraw him from the puppy sponsorship scheme until we’re sure he’s well again.

The good news is that he’s continuing to have a lovely life, surrounded by people who are caring for him every day.

Forrest still has fun!

Forrest has come a very long way with his training. His new Dog Training Instructor Marc was well under way with his soundwork when Forrest’s issues came to the fore.

Marc explains: “While we aren’t moving forward with his training, we are maintaining what he’s already learned. He’s brilliant at the cooker timer, and we also use a squeaker which is nice and quiet. I keep a very close eye on him to make sure he’s happy.”

Marc also takes Forrest for walks regularly, and he’s his usual self, so friendly and outgoing with everyone he meets. He’s even showing his great character on vet visits. Marc tells us: “The vets and all the staff absolutely adore Forrest, and make a real fuss of him.” So, even though in an ideal world he wouldn’t have these visits, he’s enjoying the attention!

What’s next?

As we’re sure you appreciate, Forrest’s welfare is the most important thing. We’re working hard to find a diet that works for him. He’s receiving the very best care, including visits to the Royal Veterinary College in London, which he takes in his big Labrador stride because he’s been so well trained.

Forrest is still loving life, but we want to make sure he continues to be happy. We really don’t think that keeping him in the limelight would be fair on him while he’s under the weather, and this is why we’re withdrawing him from the sponsorship scheme. When we know the outcome, we will tell you. Until then, we’re doing the best thing for Forrest, by taking it easy with him, and helping him get better.

Meanwhile, deafness is on the rise in the UK. It would be wonderful if you could consider helping another puppy along the way. As promised, we’ll also be in touch when Forrest has finished his training. Whatever you decide, thank you so much for sponsoring Forrest. We hope you have enjoyed following his journey, and that you, like us, are looking forward to seeing how it ends.

Hi, I'm Brendan. I write all your sponsor pup updates, printed and online. It's a hard life, writing about cute puppies who, with your support, will grow up to help deaf people leave loneliness behind. I am partially deaf myself, so I have some insights into the challenges deafness can bring. However, I don't have a dog of my own: I have two Maine Coon cats who are quite dog-like and take up most of my time!
