Gorgeous George is an all-round happy chappy

Posted by Brendan Cooper

There are lots of words that describe Gorgeous George: friendly, playful, curious, inquisitive, fearless, intelligent... the list goes on. But what really sums George up is: happy!

He’s happy wherever he goes, whatever he does. He was happy when he first moved in with his Volunteer Puppy Trainers Paula and Sean. They tell us: “He settled in immediately! He seemed very pleased and, after just a few hours, right at home.”

Since then, he’s just been a very happy chappy indeed. He’s amused himself by stealing unattended slippers. If there aren’t any slippers around, he finds it entertaining to steal flip flops instead. He’s quite content snoozing in his favourite place on the hardwood floor near the sofa or, a close second, on Sean.

What else makes Gorgeous George happy? Toys, of course! He loves his big lion toy, and in fact that’s probably his third favourite place to sleep, emitting his cute little puppy snuffles and occasionally twitching.

He’s ecstatic when he gets chin rubs, he’s delighted by cardboard boxes… he’s just a lovely little happy Spaniel, at the start of his journey to become an amazing hearing dog and completely change a deaf person’s life. Which, of course, he’s going to enjoy from his first little puppy steps...

... to his last big, confident Spaniel strides.

According to Paula and Sean, George’s positive nature is helping him with his training, even though he’s only just begun. “He has already made great progress with ‘sit’, and ‘down’,” says Paula. Sean adds: “He’s also brilliant at coming back when we call him, by name or whistle.”

He’s made such a great start in life. One day he’ll help a deaf person to feel loved, not lonely – to escape the isolation that deafness can bring. His sunny disposition and clever alerts to important sounds such as the doorbell and smoke alarm will help them to reconnect with the world around them.

Hi, I'm Brendan. I write all your sponsor pup updates, printed and online. It's a hard life, writing about cute puppies who, with your support, will grow up to help deaf people leave loneliness behind. I am partially deaf myself, so I have some insights into the challenges deafness can bring. However, I don't have a dog of my own: I have two Maine Coon cats who are quite dog-like and take up most of my time!
