Honey starts work – but finds time to play!

Posted by Brendan Cooper

Honey's journey continues. She's now undergoing her soundwork training at our centre in Buckinghamshire, learning how to alert people to important sounds such as the mobile phone, the alarm clock and fire alarm. We will tell you all about this in her next printed update.

When she’s not ‘working’ however, she lives with local volunteers, during weekday evenings and at weekends. We call this, appropriately enough, Bed and Breakfast, and they are here ‘B&Bers’!

As you can see, she’s having a lovely time. According to her B&Bers, her favourite things to do are sleep, eat, swim, sleep, play with her ball, play with her toy called Mr Lion, and then sleep some more. They’ve supplied some fantastic photos that you can see below.

The following were taken at the River Chess in Chorleywood, a beautiful place with stunning scenery. Honey does like a bit of a run-around and a splash. Who doesn’t?

Their take on Honey: “She has such a great character. Nothing seems to faze her and she is a very loving pup. Over the last few months she has been very busy at weekends meeting new people, going on trips to the garden centre and exploring the countryside.”

Meeting people, going on trips and exploring might sound like fun, but they are also important parts of how our pups continue to learn about the world, and be confident in it.

Say her B&Bers: “Honey loves to go on walks here and really enjoys swimming in the river. There are always lots of other dogs to play with and lots of people to give her fuss and cuddles.”

Honey spends a lot of time asleep, catching up after a day at Big School – that is, the day’s work being trained to recognise sounds. Everything we do is designed to be a fun game for our pups, so even when they’re learning about new sounds, they think they’re just playing a game. It can get tiring however!

Her favourite toy is Mr Lion who she has had since she was a puppy.

Her B&Bers tell us that “another favourite toy is her giant tennis ball which she loves throwing and chasing around the garden (and squashing my flowers with!)”

Once she’s had a good run around, it’s then time for a spot of sunbathing and a little snooze – again, in one of her funny sleeping positions!

Honey also took part in The Great British Dog Walk at Hughenden Manor…

… and had great fun meeting everyone at the Hearing Dog Spring Show.

That’s all for now!

If you’d like to comment or ask a question, please do so below. We can either answer them ourselves, or pass them on to Honey’s B&B volunteers who would be more than happy to help.

Thank you again for sponsoring Honey. She’s growing up from a cute, playful pup into an immensely capable hearing dog, and you have made this possible.

Hi, I'm Brendan. I write all your sponsor pup updates, printed and online. It's a hard life, writing about cute puppies who, with your support, will grow up to help deaf people leave loneliness behind. I am partially deaf myself, so I have some insights into the challenges deafness can bring. However, I don't have a dog of my own: I have two Maine Coon cats who are quite dog-like and take up most of my time!
