Kallie finds out about the world

Posted by Brendan Cooper

Kallie continues to have a lovely life with Sharon and Peter, her volunteer puppy socialisers. They're making sure she meets plenty of people and visits lots of places, so that she learns about the big world and her place in it.

First, a video! Sharon tells us what's going on below: "Kallie has been to the beach for the first time, with her friend, hearing dog pup Hetty. She loved it and learnt to swim instantly. She adores water and can't pass a puddle!"

Kallie regularly meets up with her canine friends. You can see them below, waiting for a class at a local garden centre. Kallie’s on the right, and next to her is Casper, her brother! The black Lab at the front is called Charlie, and the yellow Lab is called Delphi, whom Sharon and Peter have also looked after while her volunteer socialisers were on holiday!

Labradors are just one of the breeds we train to help deaf people. We also use Cockapoos, Poodles and Spaniels, because this enables us to match exactly the right kind of dog to the right kind of deaf person.

Is it a hamster below? No. Is it guinea pig? No. "It's a big floppy rabbit!", says Sharon. "It has its own compound in a friend's garden. Kallie was intrigued." You can tell she's intrigued, even just by looking at the back of her head. It's all in the ears...

When we saw this photo below, we weren't sure what to make of it! What do you suppose is going on here?

Sharon explains: "It is a warehouse. Who has a warehouse like this? Ikea of course! She was brilliant going round, and lots of people stopped to chat. A great training opportunity for her and she did a great PR job!"

And finally, two photos showing Kallie visiting more public places. It's important that she behaves well no matter where she goes, because she will need to be able to accompany a deaf person to libraries, shops, cafés and so on.

Here she is doing ever so well near a lot of very tempting meat...

... and continuing to be a very well-behaved Kallie near some equally tempting dog food!

Kallie is a real star. Her next printed update is due, so you can read more about what she's up to in that. Until then, once again, thank you for sponsoring her!

Hi, I'm Brendan. I write all your sponsor pup updates, printed and online. It's a hard life, writing about cute puppies who, with your support, will grow up to help deaf people leave loneliness behind. I am partially deaf myself, so I have some insights into the challenges deafness can bring. However, I don't have a dog of my own: I have two Maine Coon cats who are quite dog-like and take up most of my time!
