Hovercrafts and heelwork, it's all good for Luna
Posted by Brendan Cooper
Before we crack on with Luna's latest Pupdate, here she is saying "Wake up, it's a beautiful morning...!"
And we're sure you'll agree, she's a beautiful puppy too!
So, here's another Pupdate for you on what Luna's been up to.
Firstly, she loves her new toy.
That's right, it's her new toy, not yours.
No, really, it's her new toy and she wants to make sure you know that!
As for technology? Meh, she can take it or leave it.
You see, Luna's life is part fun, part training (actually, the training's fun too). Her Volunteer Puppy Trainers make sure that, as well as learning skills such as how to walk nicely on her lead, or settle in a restaurant, she also has plenty of varied experiences. In this way, she learns that new things aren't scary. They can actually be quite interesting!
Here's a great example: Luna meeting a hovercraft! It's such a big, noisy thing and it could be very frightening. But Luna has been brought up so well, and is so confident, that she's just intrigued by it all.
Did we say the training's fun? So's the downtime!
We mentioned walking nicely on her lead, and the video below shows that perfectly. We call this 'heelwork' and Luna's a natural. Notice how she's happy just walking alongside her volunteer, with the lead not too tight, not too loose. Her focus is entirely on the person she's with. And why's that, do you suppose? Treats, of course! Whenever she's a good girl, she gets treats. We call it 'reward based training' and it works wonderfully well. Luna is learning that walking in this way is a 'good' thing to do, because she gets a reward. In future, she'll happily walk alongside her deaf partner, no matter what's going on around her.
And then there's a bit more downtime.
And a bit more downtime - this time taking the concept of 'a bit of a splish-splosh' a bit further.
Aaaaaaand a bit more downtime! Have you ever seen such a contented, happy doggy?
So there you have Luna. She's got it all really - looks, intelligence, personality. She's doing so well, and this is because of your kindness in sponsoring her. So, from all of us at Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, thank you for your support.
